POSITION: Recreation Assistant (Lead Lifeguard)/NF-0189-02
SALARY: $11.00-$14.00/PH
EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Flexible(May be scheduled to work up to 40 hours weekly. Maybe required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings. Not eligible for group benefits.)

DUTIES: Leads and assists in direction of Recreation Assistant (lifeguard) positions; including monitoring pool activities and ensures swimmers are well supervised to ensure all applicable policies and procedures of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) regarding the use of Aquatic facilities and waterfront operations are followed. Communicates these polices to other staff and patrons. Ensures lifeguards perform their duties in compliance with established regulations and instructions that are outlined in applicable manuals and policies and reports infractions to the supervisor. Ensures that lifeguards rotate as scheduled and during assigned breaks. Provides relief to lifeguards as required. Monitors equipment, takes head counts and observes conditions of area assigned (e.g., possible hazards, water/chemical conditions, wind and weather) to ensure a safe environment reports discrepancies to immediate supervisor. Performs cleaning duties and leads other lifeguard staff in performing of such tasks (i.e. basic janitorial services, vacuuming and skimming) along with routine facility maintenance as assigned by Aquatics Program Manager. Serves as the primary liaison between the activity, security, medical departments, and Aquatics Program Manager during emergency situations. Prepares accident/incident reports during emergency situations and immediately notifies Management of all emergencies. Incumbent must inform the Aquatics Coordinator and recommend closing swimming area until safe conditions prevail. Monitors, establishes and executes daily physical fitness training for water safety staff. Interviews and recommends selection of all lifeguard positions to the supervisor. Provides introductory orientations to all aquatic’s staff. May open and close the facility and will serve as the Manager on Duty (MOD) in the absence of the Aquatics Coordinator. Ensures maintenance work for year round facility upkeep to include, but not limited to water quality assessments, facility equipment inspections including stands, boards, ropes, and safety gear. Conducts and documents pool chemical testing results. Checks chlorine and pH levels on a scheduled basis; notifies Certified Pool Operator or supervisor in order to adjust any chemical imbalances. Alerts the Aquatics Coordinator of problems with pool equipment and safety issues; when unsafe environmental or health conditions exist. Leads and conducts classes, workshops and special events based on established guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP). Administers aquatic assessment testing and certification in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD), Department of the Navy (DON) and CNIC policy. Checks identification cards for authorized patrons and collects usage fees, if applicable. Initiates rescue and recovery efforts, contacting medical personnel and performing first aid services. Manages customer service inquiries and complaints in a diplomatic and professional manner. Assists in compilation of time sheets, schedules for the supervisor and enters approved leave in the system in the absence of the supervisor. Provides input to assist in the evaluations of employee performance. Leads and manages staffing, supplies, equipment, maintenance and upkeep of facilities. Monitors cash handling in accordance with established policies. Ensures all lifeguard staff attends continuous training programs and are able to execute emergency action plans in their areas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors or outdoors under favorable weather conditions. May be exposed to sunburn and eye irritation due to chlorinated water. Physical exertion averages twenty-four pounds with periods of strenuous physical exertion. Require long periods of standing, sitting, walking, bending and patrolling of assigned area.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be at least have 3 years of experience in the Aquatics Dept and must be currently certified and possess a certificate in both Lifeguard Training and CPR-PR from an approved organization. A current Water Safety Instructor certification is desirable. Also required to pass the Recreation facilities written and swim test. Must be a mature individual who can exercise control over large groups of people. Must present a neat, clean and presentable appearance. Applicant must complete requirement for local/state/national background check investigations (including finger prints). A valid drivers license is required. Education may be verified and personal references and previous employers will be contacted in regard to background investigations.
NOTE: As a condition of employment, selectee(s) will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer within the first 30 days of employment. This is the DOD standard method of payment of personnel. Employees will be subject to administrative action for failure to enroll unless a waiver has been obtained.

2. Military Spouse Preference (MSP): Qualifying spouses eligible for MSP are spouses of an active duty military member of the U.S. Armed Forces, including members of the National Guard or Reserves on active duty. The marriage must have occurred before the military member received official permanent change of station (PCS) orders to the installation listed above. MSP is applicable only when applying for NAF positions at the NF-03 and below and equivalent craft and trade (CT) positions.
